Wintering, Is this Cold enough?

Hi all.... the winter is here for real (Orange Co NY). My trees are enjoying their winter digs in the garage. As I may have mentioned in the fall, I placed a heat devise under the Bonsai Shelf. It seems to be working. At the present we have had several days of 10-15 degree (F) temperatures outside. The temp at the shelf does not seem to go below 34 (F). My question is "Will this temp be enough to give the trees a good rest for the winter?" I have elms, hornbeams, and maples on this shelf. Thanks and be well Jay

Re: Wintering, Is this Cold enough?

That sounds ok to me although a little colder wouldn't hurt anything. You will have to watch them and make sure they don;t get too warm though or they may start budding before you are ready to put them outside. I remember your post in the fall but don't remember the details. Do you have the heating device hooked up to a thermostat?

Re: Wintering, Is this Cold enough?

Hi Tony,
The heating system is a copper tube grid under the Bonsai shelf. The copper tube is filled with anti-freeze and I attached a short (6 ft) electric heat tape with a termastat. The heat does not come on till the air ( actually the copper pipe) gets below 32 degrees. I have a remote probe in the mulch around the trees and have been monitoring the temp. It has not gotten above 39 degrees during this cold wave and has not gotten below 28 degrees (I re-checked).

Re: Wintering, Is this Cold enough?

Jay,
Congrats on such a high tech sounding overwintering device. I think there might be an article there or something.
I wish I could give advice on this subject but sad to say it was 78 degrees here yesterday, and I got a little sunburn. Sorry...

Re: Wintering, Is this Cold enough?

Article I think I should leave the article writting to someone with a little more experience. Plus this is the first year I have tried this system. It is only designed to moderate the supper cold temps I can get. I am hoping that it will prevent the temps from going down to the single degree type temps and keep things in the 20 -30 degree range in the bitter cold. Time will tell. So far the winter has not been that cold, only in the teens, but the rest of January and February are ahead of us. I'll keep you posted.
