by "Budding like crazy" do you mean it's put out leaves, or just the buds are swelling preparing ot burst? Leaf buds are fine in freezing weather--unless they have opened--by opening, I mean if you can see the edges of leaves on the buds.
Once the leaves have begun to open, you have to provide shelter. If your tree has leaves, it needs light and can't take frost. Your only option if that has occurred is to bring the plant inside your house, give it a bright location and hope for the best until spring arrives and the danger of frost has passed. Putting it in a dark place with no light if it has leaves will kill it or greatly weaken it. If the buds havn't burst, get it into the coldest place in the yard. Let it freeze and remain as cold as possible. Amur maple is extremely cold hardy in dormancy. The cold will stop the bud elongation. You will have to be attentive to the trees during warm spells, as that will just spur it on more. Mulching it heavily when it's cold will help moderate the temperatures--cold and warmth and keep the plant's roots cooler on warm days. If the leaves are out, repotting is too. There is always next year... |

Just happy to be here

Thanks Rockm, I can see just the edges of some (5 or 6) leaves, so I guess I'll bring it indoors, Maybe an south facing window? and no repotting until next year. I hope the little guy lives. What about superthrive? should I go ahead and start trying to bring it out of dormancy more, since it is inside? and what about it's spring prune?
