well, i wintered my elm outdoors, right up against the foundation fo my house. i did the exact same thing the year before and had no problems. i havent repotted this elm for 2 years, so i was thinking about doing some root pruning and hoping that would get it too bud and go into leaf. the branches are flexible, and green under the bark, but to not have any leaves or even swelling buds right now has got me very worried that it is going to die. i have been patient so far, but it has been pretty warm for over a month now, and our last frost was in early april.
just to let you know, i also mulch my trees in a box to keep the roots from freezing solid. i make sure that the plants dont dry out completely either during the winter months. i will have to post some picutres of my trees, i just repotted a trident maple of mine, that is approx. 24" tall, with a 4" trunck. it is my favorite tree, along with all my other favorites too, lol. jmuzzey |

Sounds just like my elms...sickening, isn't it? I am beginning to expect the worst with mine, since a small one which was looking similarly sick to the big ones has now died (r.i.p.). My plum is now doing great, however... Let's see your pictures then... Jerry

Certainly give them time. With the winter/spring, real spring, summer and dry wet cycle we've had here in the NE, I don't know what month it is and I can look at a calerndar. Give your trees time -- I don't think they can read, but they do react to the weather. Don't keep them too wet, nor too dry adn wait. I've had a few deciduous trees skip an entire season without pushing leaves, then the next year, they woke up ... if they are gree under the bark (the cambium), when you scrape away a small amount of the bark, you still can hope and maybe turn out well.

I wish I had positive news but so far nothing. Our weather has turned warm in the last 4 days but still fairly wet.
Still waiting... |

Well the scratch test still shows green under the bark on lower portions of the tree but the bad news is that the top portions no longer have green under the bark. I suspect this means it is die-back from the top down which may not stop until the tree is toast. Sadly this tree wasn't worked on at all last season so I have little or no reason for the loss. I guess we'll see.

My largest Elm is now dead, definitely. Did the autopsy myself and the roots had rotted or been severely frost damaged... Scratching branches did reveal SOME green in places, but scratching the major branches and the trunk gave only brown...
This leaves me with 3 others in pots which are most probably dead now too. Bugger. Anyway, I drove past the new Lodder Bonsai (now in Harmelen, NL) and bought some new small Chinese Elms... Some people never learn :-) Jerry
