Trident maple - To bud or not to bud

Well I'm approaching serious concern for one of my favorite Trident Maple trees. My other Trident Maple has had leaves for weeks, however my favorite Trident only has buds. We had a tough winter and both trees were side by side in my unheated garage. The tree appears to have small buds and the scratch test shows green under the bark. For some reason the buds just won't open into leaves. It's almost June here so even in my Zone 4-5 backyeard I'm thinking it may be an Ex-Trident maple.

I have not worked on the tree in two seasons so it's been untouched, just growing.

Anything I can try or do here to encourage the buds or test for life? I can show pictures of what I think are the buds if you think it will help.

Hard to tell if they have progressed at all in the last few weeks. Our weather has been cold lately for April/May/June and wet.

Hope?

I just noticed this today so there may be some hope. Hopefully this progresses but why so late and so few?

Looks like it will be fine. Buds look healthy to me. Just wait for a stretch of warm days and it should be bursting out all over.

Seems so awful late, especially compared to my other Trident and normal maples that I'm still concerned. It's had these buds for quite some time.

Any explanation for why one tree would be so late and one well leaved out given their exact same treatment??

They're different organisms, genetically programmed to react differently to ensure the survival of the species - unless they're genetic clones. - then you might be looking at some kind of pathology. Of course, that's possible anyway.

Regards,

Matt

Thanks Matt. I'll keep my eye on it for now. If it was not one of my favorite trees I probably would not have even noticed. I've marked the branch with the most hopeful looking bud pictured above to see if it progresses or if the leaf opens and/or dies.

Oddly enough we also have one of our 10+ larches that is exhibiting a similar behavior. Buds swolen but not open yet all other larches are fully open.

I had a Chinese Elm that 2 seasons ago did not open until June. Last year it did the same but never opened. Very troubling these pesky deciduous tees.

hello, i am new to this site, but reading your post sounds just like one of my chinese elms. it has not gotten any leaves yet, it is now june, and i am very worried that it is dead. but the branches are green when you break them. the tree seemed to be budding well, then we got hit with week long frost/cold front and it stopped progressing. i dont know if it will make it or not...........i am worried........
