Purple leaved fig bonsai!! Is it dead or dormant?

hey everyone,

I just retrieved my ficus microcarpa bonsai from winter storage in my grandparent's semi-heated garage, and noticed that all the leaves have turned purplely brown, and some have withered and died. I know that some trees will change color with cold temperatures, but i have never seen this particular tree do so in the winter. I had the pot wrapped in a towel, with a plastic bag over the tree, and i watered it every two weeks. the temperature in the garage was usually 0-10 degrees celsius (I live in alberta by the way) but we had some cold snaps of down to minus 40 so it may have frozen in there. Is my tree dead, dying, or perfectly fine? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thank you,
YoungBonsai

Um, ficus are tropical species. They cannot stand temperatures much below 40 F. Freezing will kill them.

Trees that change color with the seasons are temperate zone species. Leaf color change is a sign a TEMPERATE species is entering winter dormancy. Tropical species, being from warmer climates, don't enter such deep dormancy. Leaf color change in them is due to external stress and/or shock.
