3 will make a very nice broom as it grows out. It's probably not ready for a bonsai container yet, though. I made this mistake with a Ginkgo and it sets back the development quite a bit, with five years or so in a growing box and then on to a large bonsai container for awhile longer

I'm still in the bonsai container after 10 years of slow growth, and guess what? It still needs five in the five in the box that it never got!

Regards,

Matt

Regarding tree [pic 3a], this broom styled tree started life in China, and as I said I hard-pruned the foliage back, now two days ago, the amount was way over a 50% reduction of the foliage mass, sadly I do not have the possibility of ground-growing any of my trees, so in bonsai pots they must live.

This particular tree is a fast grower and like the other two [above] has become evergreen, permanently lives outside on my frost-free balcony. So after I defoliate it later this week, and as the new buds sprout and develope, I will watch it's progress and keep you posted.

Nigel:
Why not over pot your Elm? This should give your tree's roots a chance to spread out.

G'day Carl,

Thought you knew already that my space is so restricted that I've got trees on top of trees already [shelves climbing up the tiny walls], but know exactly what you mean, would if I could, thanx for the suggestion.

Come to think about it, Nigel, I remember seeing a picture of your collection on the deck... Yep, it was crowded.....

But I think you should post a picture here, so people would know what we are talking about!

Thumbs up

Yep and OK, here's one earlier this year, now think twice as crowded and you've got the idea, needs must that I constantly circulate the trees which is real hard on my 70yr old back, [spend two hours each day doing just that] and sure keeps me good and active.

G'day mate,

Not on your life....trust is rather scarce over here, at anyrate just bought a good quality trestle table that will bring quite a number of the trees up by about 30 inches, which will also make a fair area for some of my pet shade lovers arrives Saturday this week, will then make new pics and post.
