Zone 3 Tolerant Trees

I was reading laurengeary's thread on protecting trees from harsh winters and thought I'd post my (in progress) list of zone 3 tolerant trees here for the benefit of all the cold climate loving folks out there. I'm not 100% sure that this list is correct or if many of the trees listed are even really suitable for bonsai. But I think it's a pretty good start...

Please point out any mistakes or provide additions if you feel like doing so.

-Cody

This is very helpful! It gives me a good idea of what I can plant here, and not have to worry about them freezing over winter. Thanks!

Interesting list! A few trees that occurred to me from my days in Montana were Lodgepole Pine, Ponderosa Pine, Alpine Fir and Western Redcedar. Wish I could remember their Scientific names.

Alot of the trees that you mention are first rate for bonsai. Many of them are not well suited for our climate here in the Ozarks, at all.

Cody,

I really like Acer Pseudosieboldianum, the Korean maple. Some references list it as hardy to zone 3, others as hardy to zone 4. Either way, it might be well worth a try.

Mountain maples has them, for example:

With my best regards,
Carl

Fred and Carl, thanks for the leads. When I have more time (I'm moving in less than a week!), I'm going to go through the list and do some fact gathering, and updating, etc. I'll also be putting it all together for a web-page for Zone 3 bonsai, some time soon. I have a few more weeks here until growing season starts...

Thanks again,
Cody
