Zone 3 Tolerant Trees
I was reading laurengeary's thread on protecting trees from harsh winters and thought I'd post my (in progress) list of zone 3 tolerant trees here for the benefit of all the cold climate loving folks out there. I'm not 100% sure that this list is correct or if many of the trees listed are even really suitable for bonsai. But I think it's a pretty good start...
Please point out any mistakes or provide additions if you feel like doing so. -Cody ZONE 3 TOLERANT TREES: Acer ginnala Amur Maple Alnus incana ssp. rugosa (A. tenuifolia) Thinleaf Alder Andromeda glaucophylla Bog Rosemary Artemisia filifolia Sand Sage Artemisia frigida Fringed Sage Artemisia nova Black Sage Betula occidentalis Water Birch Betula papyrifera Paper Birch Betula pendula Eurpoean white birch, silver birch Caragana arborescens Siberian Peashrub Carpinus caroliniana (C. americana) American hornbeam Cornus sericea var. sericea (C. stolonifera) Red-Osier Dogwood Crataegus mollis Downy Hawthorn Eleagnus angustifolia Russian Olive Ginkgo Biloba Ginkgo Juniperus scopulorum Rocky Mountain Juniper Juniperus virginiana Eastern Red Cedar Larix laricina American larch Malus baccata mandshurica (M. cerasifera) Manchurian crabapple, Siberian crabapple Malus 'Pink Spires' Pink Spires Crabapple Malus sargentii Sargent's crabapple Malus toringo (M. sieboldii) Toringo crabapple Picea abies Norway spruce Picea abies 'Maxwellii' Norway spruce, dwarf spruce Picea engelmannii Blue Englemann spruce, dwarf Alberta spruce Picea glauca white spruce Picea pungens Blue Spruce Pinus mugo Mugo Pine (Swiss Mountain Pine) Pinus resinosa Red Pine Pinus sylvestris Scots Pine Pinus strobus Eastern white pine Prunus americana American Plum Prunus bessyi Sand Cherry Prunus maackii Amur chokecherry Prunus pennsylvanica Pin Cherry (Fire Cherry) Prunus serotina Black cherry Prunus tormentosa downy cherry, Korean bush-cherry, Nanking cherry, Chinese bush fruit, Tormentosa cherry Prunus virginiana 'Shubert' Canada Red Cherry Prunus x cistena 'Purpleleaf' Sand Cherry Pseudotsuga menziesii var. glauca Douglass Fir Quercus gambelii Gambel's Oak Quercus macrocarpa Bur Oak Ribes cereum Squaw Currant Sheperdia argentea Silver Buffaloberry Sorbus aucuparia European Mountain Ash Sorbus aucuparia 'Michred' Cardinal Royal Mountain Ash Sorbus decora Showy Mountain Ash Sorbus scopulina Rock Mountain Ash Syringa meyeri 'Palibin' Dwarf Korean Lilac Tilia americana American Linden, Basswood Last edited by acousticco : 6-Feb-2004 at 01:35 AM. |

This is very helpful! It gives me a good idea of what I can plant here, and not have to worry about them freezing over winter. Thanks!

Interesting list! A few trees that occurred to me from my days in Montana were Lodgepole Pine, Ponderosa Pine, Alpine Fir and Western Redcedar. Wish I could remember their Scientific names.
Alot of the trees that you mention are first rate for bonsai. Many of them are not well suited for our climate here in the Ozarks, at all. Fred |

Cody,
I really like Acer Pseudosieboldianum, the Korean maple. Some references list it as hardy to zone 3, others as hardy to zone 4. Either way, it might be well worth a try. Mountain maples has them, for example: http://www.mountainmaples.com/WS4D_...s4d?ClassNo=302 With my best regards, Carl

Fred and Carl, thanks for the leads. When I have more time (I'm moving in less than a week!), I'm going to go through the list and do some fact gathering, and updating, etc. I'll also be putting it all together for a web-page for Zone 3 bonsai, some time soon. I have a few more weeks here until growing season starts...
Thanks again, Cody
