Re: Zelkova

The seeds can be sown anytime. *When conditions are "right" (temperature and moisture almost exclusively) They should come up within a couple of weeks, and you might want to have a gro-lamp available to give some light and heat until they can be placed outdoors. *That would give you a jump on outdoor germination.

Zelkova is a deciduous tree, so you would eventually encounter problems indoors long-term. *A similar, but better choice would be Chinese Elm (ulmus parviflora) which is semi-deciduous.

Here's part 2 of a 2-part series by Kevin Bailey on starting seeds

Regards,

Matt

Re: Zelkova

Oke, say i want to keep it outside then, will it be something that i will want to bring in during the winter as well(i mean after it loses it's leaves and all that good stuff)?

Oh YEAH! THANK YOU so much for helping me out. I'm a lil green (tee hee) when it comes to all this plant and bonsai stuff. I'm absolutly facinated, but it's gonna take a while to get my bearings, thank you all so much for answering my questions!

Sara,

I am almost certain you will want to, but I don't think it would be a good idea

Re: Zelkova

Sara... Matt has given you a possibility for indoor Bonsai, the Chinese Elm. I have heard differing thought on the Elm for indoor growth but many feels it will do fine. There are other trees you might choice for indoor Bonsai. Several Ficus are good as well as Fukien Tea and Serissa. I am NO EXPERT but have come by this info from listening and reading! Jay

I am resurrecting this thread because i just won an ebay auction for some chinese zelkova seeds.
may have been a mistake, but i'll give them a go anyways.

so heated feet for sowing, needs its dormancy period, can be sown in the winter to jumpstart the growing season and get a bit longer seedling growth time.

I will be waiting till october to start these, so i'll let you know how it goes. (along with everything else i am doing!)

anything else you can suggest?
