Question Yaupon Holly

Hello all...

Picked up a 10-gal. Dwarf Yaupon Holly today on clearance at a local nursery (thanks Ralph!), and I wanted to know some opinions. Is it too late here in the Dallas area to cut this thing down to a stump? What about drastic branch pruning (not a complete stump)?

OR, should I wait until early spring next year to do any pruning at all?

I would appreciate some feedback.

Thanks!

Jennifer

JT,
Is there a photo coming. ? Well Ilex Vomitoria, eh? Vigorous, good budder, especially in your area.

Yeah If it were mine I'd style that puppy now. These like to sucker alot. Is it a single trunk or a clump? I say go for it!

Life is short ,clip it up!

Yaupon

Hello all! I purchased a Dwarf Yaupon Holly yesterday and wanted some opinions. I am attaching several pictures below.

I was shown a link to BonsaiMon’s yaupon (located here) and this is similar to the direction I would like to eventually go with this thing. I know that mine will have a ton of pruning scars and I would have to conceal them and therefore I could not have as open a front view as BonsaiMon has with his. So, let’s get to my questions:

1. Do you think this is the right direction to go with this tree?
2. Does anyone know how well large pruning scars heal on yaupons?
3. Should I wait until spring to do what I want to do, or do you think I have enough time in the growing season here in North Texas to start now?

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks!

Jennifer

Last, this shows the "stump" would be 4" across from where I would prune the two side branches:

Jennifer, my experience indicates wait until Spring. I bought two of these at about this time 3 years ago. One, I left alone until the following Spring and one I pruned and repotted. The one I worked on responded with a burst of new growth and died that Winter. The other I still have and is doing fine. It did sulk for quite awhile after I repotted it 18 months ago, but is doing very well at this point.

This species is highly recommended by some very knowledgable Bonsai growers and I've seen some outstanding trees developed with it. I'm finding it really difficult to get my head around styling mine, however. For quite awhile, I just left it alone to grow as it pleased. Next Spring I plan to get to work on it. Which is what I said this time last year, also.

Fred
