What do new air roots look like? foliage?

What do air roots look like when they first start to form? I have a ficus that sprouts low on the trunk. These sprouts have leaves. Could this be the beginning of air roots? Do air roots have any foliage while they are growing?

Thanks to all who reply.

No, they don't look like branches, they look just like roots, with a white root tip & everything.

High humidity environments help immensely. You'll find some nice photos of developing aerial roots on this site, as well as some suggestions concerning how to encourage them.

I have had great success putting my tree entirely enclosed in plastic bags to encourage aerial roots. Works well with schefflera's as well.
