Two Mysteries

Greetings Folks,

I have a wonderful bunch of in-laws who, knowing I like plants and trees, dig all kinds of strange stuff up for me from their yards. This first one is from my sister in law. Everyone who's seen it hasn’t any idea what it is.

Any guesses?

This is a little seedling from my mother-in-law. We couldn't find any trees like it in her neighborhood, so figured it must have been seeded by a bird. I can't seem to find it in any of my reference books. Can anyone identify this one?

Thanks Everyone,

Cody

The first resembles many of the trees i've noted in various Dr. Seuss books. I'll check the child's stash of books to ensure accuracy.

Maybe you can find a miniature cat-in-the-hat to put under it.

1) No idea - but I generally use sharp instruments against anything I find looking like that thing.
2) Birch. If the leaves are much bigger than I currently think they are then it's Hazel.
