Tree ID

I was at a hotel for a wedding recently and found a tree in their courtyard which intrigued me greatly. It was a conifer, however, the "leaf" structure was very two dimensional. To explain the needles were in two rows opposite each other on the stem. A cutaway or end on view would look like this ---o---. The other curiosity was the bark which looked like birch or something very deciduous and papery. I picked a leaf but accidentally washed it before I could scan it and show it here.
It was an excellent tree and I would like to know more.
Thanks.

Not really enough information to identify the tree, as spruce, yew, hemlock all have similar arrangement of needles. Were the needles flat, or round? Different colour top and bottom?
If you can get another sample and post a picture we might be able to help
Juno
PS
You washed the sample you took? Was it dirty?? )

Thanks for the link, again, pd. It was only somewhat helpful though. Unfortunately the hotel is about an hours drive away and I usually go the opposite direction. I am going to return soon though and sneak another leaf and some pictures. I guess I'll have to pretend I'm staying there or something. I'll keep everyone posted.
