tree ID
i bought five of these to make a forest. the tag said eastern cedar, but now i'm looking at pictures of eastern cedar, and the branch/leaf structure of these looks like it is too fine to be eastern cedar. I'm wondering what they are and if they have any special care requirements.
thanks. ![]() Last edited by Luscious : 10-May-2005 at 01:09 PM. Reason: trying to add image |

well, there's "eastern red cedar" which is Juniperus viginiana and then there is "eastern white cedar" or arborvitiae which is Thuja occidentalis.
I wouldn't say I'm an expert at ID'ing, but your tree doesn't look exactly like either of these. It's closer to the thuja than the juniperus, I think. Maybe someone else will have a better clue. - bob

Looks like Eastern White Cedar(not a Cedrus at all), sometimes called arborvitae, or Thuja occidentalis. Some variation in varieties: yours looks to be apically dominant (I have several collected urbandori that are laterally dominant and they have been called globe arborvitae.)
You can find some bonsai info on your cedar here . -Candy |

thanks for the responses. I'm going to go with the assumtion that they are eastern white cedars and since i haven't seen anything like "don't touch their roots" or "they're really fussy" on any of the things they could possibly be, i think eastern white cedar is a good enough ID.
