Species Specific Information

Ok. So I'm learning like crazy and soaking up information like a sponge. So much so that my head is about to explode. In an attempt to reach maximum overload and finally blow my top, I would like to learn more about specific species.
For example: OMC wrote in a thread regarding "Selecting material for Bonsai" that one must know their species, and he talks about Dawn Redwood budding like crazy from the trunk where as other species do not. This is a general example but where can I learn more of the tendencies of specific species? All my Bonsai books are much more general. Are there any good books? articles? or should I take the learn and observe as I go route? I would hate to severely chop a tree and find out the hard way it doesn't bud the way I had hoped.
Any info greatly appreciated.

There is a lot of species-specific information in the bonsaiTALK Links folder under SPECIES, and also at BCI Species Index You can access Links from the startpage and browsing or just by using the search feature below, typing the genus name and targeting Links or BCI

There is a nice series of articles by Brent Walston on a number of different species, but I am sure you will find them on your first foray into bonsaiTALK Links

Another great source is International Bonsai magazine. Many of their issues are devoted to a single tree species and the back issues can be purchased at a very reasonable price.

Peter Adams' various out-of-print books may be harder to find, but they are excellent resources on specific species as well.

Just remember, if you happen to find his highly sought-after Maples book, who turned you on to it in the first place...

Best regards,
Old Mister

Thanks a bunch you guys.

Matt, I can already see your links are going to be very helpful. I'm printing out the pages of interest and starting a binder.

OMC, I've been browsing International Bonsai's page and I see what you mean about them being specific. I'm going to order several back issues and check it out. And wow, they go back like 30 years. I would love to get my hands on Peter Adams Maples book as I have a few Maples - and Tridents are among my favorites. If I ever find I will set you up!!!
Thanks again.
