Serissa Or Not?

Hi all,

I just picked this up and I am trying to figure out if it is another type of serissa or not.....It was in the serissa section but the nursery lady just shrugged her shoulders and did this...

Anyways it is really cool and has a really neat root base. I may use it as a bonsai project, stick it in my planter bed because it always has flowers and my wife likes that... ...Or I may just take this slip and stick it in a bunjin pot just to irritate the "twig in a pot" haters... ...hahaha

Anyone got a clue?

Aloha,
H

That looks more like a holly to me with the leaf shape the way it is. Maybe a Surinam Cherry / Malpighia?

Regards,

Matt

Matt,

Would a picture of the whole raw plant help?

It may be a couple of days, being that I don't have a digital cam, and I just sent a full roll in for developing......

Aloha,
H

Wow Matt,

I researched a little more on the net and you had it !

It is: Malpighia cocigera Miniature Holly.

Now the next question......I really would like to make this a probable bonsai project, what style would you recommend?

Aloha,
H

Are we talking hypothetical styling of an unrooted cutting?

HAHAHAHAHA.......I guess I got you going.

No, this plant is actually in a one gallon pot, but I would say that it is between 3-5 years old, has a very established root base, some exposed roots that give it some neat character. Looks a bit shrubby, but I think that I can clear out some lower branches and foliage to get it to look more tree like.

Worth the time and effort?........

Have you in your experience seen any Holly projects?

Aloha,
H

There were two Malpighia in the final running for the JAL contest in 2000. I don't recall the trees very well, but I think they were grown in China in a semi-tropical environment, where they develop quite rapidly. The site lists the ranks (50, 52) but not the trees.

I am pretty sure you could develop most any kind of bonsai style you wanted with this material. It's shrubby and has small leaves.

Regards,

Matt
