Serissa care

Hi,

I have a serissa which needs repotting! i'm planning to do that in april as i live in England and the trees kept in doors during the cold months.

Its a great looking tree which i hope will be able to be shown one day. I have been told that serissa's are hard to keep and it will die!! its been doin fine since september when i bought it. Will repotting it be fine? I've been told they dont like too much space around the roots so maybe i shouldnt take off too much root and soil?

The tree must be over 15 years old and it hasnt died yet but i'm told as soon as i do repot it it will die!!! i dont know why i'm being told this but thought i'd get some opinions on ere!

Thanks

Graeme....

Re: Serissa care

First, a few questions: Why do you plan to repot it? Do you know when it was last repotted?

If you ease the tree out of the pot, you can get an idea of the condition of the root system and whether it actually needs to be repotted.

Trees are usually best repotted when they are just about to come out of dormancy, and flowering is a good indication of dormancy.

Regards,

Matt

Re: Serissa care

GraemeK, Serrissa are very tempermental. They like to show you who is boss. I think most of the time that people have problems with them is due to over-reacting. The tree does not like to be moved to a new location, it does not like to be repotted , it does not like...., you get the idea. When it does not like something, it drops leaves.... sometimes a few.... sometimes alot! Do not over re-act and you probably will be fine..... Just the thought of a been there done that and it lived(for now).

Re: Serissa care

Hi

Yeah if i take it out of the pot it has loads of root and root coming out the bottom of the pot...
I think its best if i repot in in late April...and only take off a little root, enough for new soil etc.

That sound ok?

Graeme.

Re: Serissa care

Sounds fine. Just clip away all the roots that come out of the drainage hole to keep it unobstructed. If the pot stops draining freely, you may want to advance your repotting schedule.

Regards,

Matt
