serissa

I potted a young serissa in a bought bonsai soil that is very coarse and doesn't seem to hold moisture. How often should I water and what fertilizer as well as how often?

Re: serissa

Is the soil little bits of clay and dirt, sort of orange and brown chunks? I've used that with both of my serissas, however, when I first repotted them I tried to leave some of the original soil around the roots and filled in the rest of the container with the chunky soil.
The first repotting of a variagated tree I did wasn't too successful and most of the original soil ended up in the container (I was too nervous about hurting the tree). That one I water every 2-5 days, depending on how much sun it gets, but I can tell it's dry because I can see some regular potting soil.
The second serissa, I think it's a snow rose type, I was more daring with, thus, it is almost entirely potted in the clay soil and it is hard to tell if it's dry or not. I probably use 1/4 to a 1/3 cup of water every other day (it's only a 6 inch high tree in a very small container). I always let tap water sit in a pitcher for 24 hrs to let some of the chlorine evaporate away.
I water that one over the sink so that the water doesn't end up in the drip tray beneath. And I mist them both almost daily as I have them indoors, the first one for 6 months now. Good luck and read everything you can on bonsai sites so you can correct problems as they begin.

Re: serissa

Thanks for the information Kim, it's nice to be able to talk to someone who has a Snow Rose. Currently, I'm using a flowering type of fertilizer about once a week. What type do you use and how often do you apply it?

Do you keep your plants near a window where they get natural light, or are they under a plant lamp. I have mine outside for the summer, but will have to bring it indoors for when the weather turns colder and it will have to go under a plant lamp.
