quince

Hello all-
Has anybody had any experience with flowering quince?(Chaenoles sp.) I've heard little about them but picked up one anyway at the New England Bonsai nursery. I wanted a plant with some springtime character. I looked at the BCI species listing but was left with more questions than answers.
Any info would be appreciated, thanks.

Re: quince

Quince make wonderful bonsai. *You have bought a "Japanese Flowering Quince," Chaenomeles sp.. as opposed to the "Chinese Quince" Pseudocydonia sinensis, which is better known for its fruit. *

Many of the flowering quince are grafted or started from cuttings because seedlings take a long time to flower. *

There are a few quince links in the bonsaiTALK Links directory that I have found. *Just type QUINCE into the search engine and check down in the species portion that comes back.

There is also a nice Chinese Quince on display at the Takagi Virtual Museum. *There are some quince in the ***GALLERY*** just type in QUINCE in the searchbar that comes up when you hit that page. *Look in particular at the treatment of the shohin, and you'll see that the key word is twigginess. *That gives you more flowering wood and more interesting character.

Re: quince

Dear P-bob,
You will get alot of enjoyment out of that quince. Mine are blooming right now!
Quick rundown
-Repot in Fall
-Easy to make cutting from including root cuttings
-flower first then comes the leaves
-lots of sun and you will get off and on blooms all summer
-suckers easily so it is easy to make a clump style

Re: quince

Thanks for the quick replies!
I'm really hopeful about the quince. It already has buds (flowers?) that I assume will be whitish or pink. It's not more than fat pencil thickness now (I tried to pick the thickest) but if the potential is there for what I've seen in any of the interesting photos, it really will be great! Thanks again.
