Querks of Quercus
i have a Quercus Rubor that I recieved from evergreen garden works in a 2 3/4 pot. I repotted it into a larger two gallon pot. I live in an apartment so planting in the ground is not an option. my plan was simply to let this thing grow. Oddly enough after it broke bud, and put out only about 10 leaves, it stopped growing. There were some other buds swelling, but they never produced a shoot. I was wondering if anyone has had this kind of experience with oaks. I have been feeding weekly with a weak fertilizer since bud break. it has been a lot cooler at night lately with some frost. has anyone else observed this strange growth. Maybe I'm too used to grape vines.

It is not clear to me where you are growing this tree - are trying to grow this oak inside your apartment? If so, then it is probably lack of light. But you mention frost, so that makes me think that maybe you have it outside. Part of the problem may be that you have put it into a pot that is probably too big, so your soil may be staying too moist (see Brent's overpotting article.) What kind of soil are you using? What is your watering routine?

Sorry for the lack of information. I have the tree outside all the time, unless rain is threatening in which case i move it inside into a window box. While outside, it's in full sun. as for watering, i use the finger probe technique. i stick my finger into the soil, which is a bonsai/cactus soil mix, ans see how deep I have to go to feel moist soil. If the moisture is deeper than my second knuckle, i give the tree some water.

Last night, while looking at my oak, i decided i could have over watered. I took the sphagnum moss off the top of the soil since temps have been much cooler lately. I'll let the soil dry down quite a bit before watering again. hopefully i will see new growth soon.

Cord,
Oaks can be slow, give it some time to grow into its new enviroment. Go get some more, Brent needs to sell 100 dollars every day. And it will help you to not fixate on this pitiful little seedling! Have fun!
