Pruning A Rhodendron Mhoerheim ?
Hi,
I have a Rhododendron Mhoerheim (looks like an azalea with small leaves) that suffered some frost damage last winter. I like to cut it back hard and start developing branches from scratch. Can you do that with a Rhododendron/azalea ?? regards, René |

Yes, any plant commonly used as a hedge can be cut back very hard. Same goes for privet, olive, cotoneaster, pyracantha, boxwood, etc.
About the only concern is to make sure that there is time for the new growth to harden off before frost. For very heavy headback (cutting back to no foliage) it's best to do it just before the plant breaks dormancy, which for many azaleas is late spring to mid summer (during flowering) Regards, Matt

Hi Matt,
Thanks for the advice. That means I'm to late now. I will wait until next spring. Thanks again, René |
