Port Jackson Fig

I have a newly aquired Port Jackson Fig, Ficus rubiginosa, I think it is about 2-3 years old. Some of its leaves are very big, too big for my liking.

If I cut them off (It is summer here at the moment), will they grow back smaller? If so, where should I cut them? Research tells me to cut at the tip of its stalk, just under the leaf itself.

Any posts concerning this would be appreciated.

Re: Port Jackson Fig

Hi Bren,

Does your fig have any branches yet, or is it mainly a single trunk with leaves coming right off the trunk?

Jerry Meislik has a well-illustrated article on fig defoliation that might be of great help to you.

Do be sure that the plant is actively growing at the time of defoliation. *Never defoliate any tree that is not at the peak of health.

Regards,

Matt

Re: Port Jackson Fig

Dear Matt,

Thanks for the article included in your message. It was extremely helpful. My fig has a small number of branches, and after reading the article, I think i will wait a few years before defoliating.

Thanks again,

Bren.
