Back Budding

I don't have much experience with pines. Do most all pines backbud. I'm guessing some do more than others. I'm wondering about Austrian, Ponderosa, Jack compared to Black or White pines?

From experience I have found that they do back bud under certain circumstances. I don't believe they bud back on very old wood at all. On new young healthy growth they do bud back. There are some techniques in achieving good bud back. I guess my best piece of advice is to keep pinching out new growth at the tips so that inner buds are given every chance to form and survive.

I'm sure others will chime in with some more help.

Johnny,

Allow me to share my recent experiences with the back budding on blk pines. Due to much advice I have read on this board and recieved locally, I began pruning the tree from the bottom up...over the course of about 3 weeks. WHen I say prune, it was a little bit of everything. Snipping off the end of branches to simple needle removal. Much to my surprise, I have had some significant back budding not only on the branches, but on the trunk as well. (trunk is 2' in diameter and very old wood). Now, I dont completely understand the whole sap flow thing, but my experience tells me to start from the bottom and work your way up SLOWLY. If any others can offer any technical thoughts as to what caused this, or maybe I just lucked out, please chime in.

And where are they now the little people of Stonehenge? And what would they say to us, if we were here...tonight?"

From the movie, Spinal Tap, wherein there is also some embarrassing confusion over inches and feet...
