Mugho pine browning

Hello,
I purchased a cheap mugho pine about a month ago. I watered it every other day or so, until we got several days of heavy rain. I didn't bother watering it then. But now I notice the candles are slightly brown and not quite as smooth. The branches are still flexible, though. Is there any way to restore the green to the candles? It frustrates me that it's so sensitive to underwatering... But I don't want to overwater it. could the brown be a sign it needs to be repotted?

~thanks in advance~

Re: Mugho pine browning

It might be overwatering too. *Maybe it's more likely. *Mugho pines really can't stand too much water in the container, and if it wasn't a fast-draining bonsai soil, watering every other day might have been too much, too.

Poke your finger down into the soil and see how wet it really is in there. *Let the soil dry a bit until it is just barely moist before you water again. *There are some suggestions in the ***WATERING_FAQ***

Regards,

Matt

Re: Mugho pine browning

Thanks for the suggestion. I stopped watering it so frequently and the softness seems to be returning to the candles/needles (maybe it's just my imagination, though). The soil seems to be relatively quick draining, but would it still be a good idea to move it out of any rain except light rain?
One general question: is there a good way of determining (from the foliage) whether a plant is underwatered or overwatered? I've heard that overwatered plants have foliage that turns yellowish but in this case the brown appears to be from overwatering.
