Maples flower, too!
Often overlooked, the flowers of Japanese Red Maple (Acer palmatum atropopureum) are rather small and insignificant as compared with the much larger leaves. These flowers will eventually set the familiar winged seeds we see in fall.
In bonsai the branch extensions which give rise to flower and seed in the maple are frequently pruned away as part of practice of miniaturizing the tree. This is true as well for the branch spurs that give rise to pine cones, which are a rare but welcome treat on bonsai pines. ![]()
