Loropetalum chinesis / Fringe flower
My wife recently purchased one of these for me. I think it was for her actually and I get to take care of it - at least she's showing an intrest. Anyways, I'm not finding any Bonsai related info about these Trees/Shrubs. Does anyone have a photo of one as a bonsai? (Mine is a stick in a pot.) Or maybe has worked with one and can offer some advice.
I did find this link.Loropetalum chinesis Patrick |

Pat, when I lived in South Florida I worked at a garden center with many varieties of great material to play with. I spent some time with the Loropetalum and kept it as a bonsai for three years. It does bud back on old wood and is fond of the sun without burning. Blooming was a bit slow when as a bonsai. More attention to the right fertilizer would help. I always had mine outdoors in FL. so I don't know how well it would do indoors over winter in Vermont. Definitely has to be indoors up north.
I now live in Mich. and no longer am in possesion of it. Good luck, Hector |

Thanks for the response Hector.
Since I'm in Zone 3/4 that's part of what I am worried about with this tree. Should I provide it with a dormancy period in a greenhouse or can I bring it indoors to my tropicals room? Patrick Last edited by patmac : 11-Dec-2005 at 02:55 PM. |

Patrick, definately bring it in the house as if it is a tropical. It isn't one that would do well leaving it out to go dormant. It may lose its leaves initially. I had mine when in Florida and always kept it outdoors, so I'm not sure how it will react inside. A heated greenhouse would be the better place for it. |

I noticed earlier that I have been leaving the 2nd n out of chinensis every time I spell it. It's too late to edit the thread title. Maybe a moderator can fix it if they read this.
Anyways, I will treat my Fringe Flower as a tropical and hope for the best. Thanks for the replys Hector. Patrick |
