apical dominance factor
Weak lower branches can be a problem with many bonsai, particularly conifers.
Plants like this are striving hard to be 100 ft tall, and heavily favor the apex for strength. In addition to pruning the apex for silhouette, you need to thin the crown of the tree to allow light to pass into the interior in order to keep the interior and lower branches alive, as these branches live in the shadow of the canopy above. If the tree is otherwise healthy and putting out good growth, this is likely the cause. Also be sure to rotate your bonsai every month or so. The heat of the sun on the container promotes the growth of roots on that side, and we can all benefit from the change in angle of the sun during the season or throughout the day. Good luck, Matt
