Lantana

Hey Guys,
I potted up a way cool nursery reject a few months ago. It's a Lantana with two nice trunks that I've done in a semi-cascade style. The tree is inside under lights (gittin' cold up here in the Adirondaks), cool at night (58 F) and warmer during day (65 F). It gets about 1000 Lux for 12 hours, sprayed occasionally and kept on a pebble tray. Has anyone had much experience with keeping Lantana inside over winter? I seem to have good luck with tropicals, it's the plants needing dormancy like maples that are tough for me - on a December day my cold frame with an automatic vent will still get up to 80 F, only to fall to 35 F that night!

Re: Lantana

Hi JLK,

The lantana that lived for several decades at my parents house went semi dormant during mild winters (temps around 27-35 degrees) But it was right up against the house on a south facing wall. It finally died when it was pruned heavily one fall and then an extremely cold winter did it in.

Here's a link to the BCI page on lantana

As far as the coldframe is concerned, you might see if you can buffer the temperature a little more. Maybe adding a floor of brick or anything to buffer the temperature - sealed gallon jugs or drums of water. It does seem that the vent could be working a little better. Sometimes you need one at the floor and one at the roofline to create enough convection.

You could also substitute white plastic for clear, or whitewash the windows if they are glass. This will reduce the "greenhouse effect" somewhat 80 degrees during the day is pretty
