Juniper - Brown, just starting

I got a Juniper two months ago...w/o knowing anything I left it "inside" near a window for 5 hrs of sunlight daily. I watered it 1-2Xs per week and kept it moist. This tree was bought at a nursery already in a pot, but I don't know how old it is. I left it inside because of the outside weather elements here in San Franciscco during December and January. I now know it needs to be outside:-) I've put it on my fire escape (3hrs of early morning sunlight, and 3 hrs of afternoon sunlight). Temps are around 45-65 degrees nowadays, but a bit windy on the street I live on (varies from 8-14mph). Two of the larger branches have started to turn brown, but the needles are still green. The rest of the needles on several other branches are still green and the branches haven't turned color yet. There is moss on the top of the soil, that used to be green, but is now an orange/brown. Is it too late? Please help me, I'm a first timer.

Do I need to set up some wind blockers of some sort? I've read about dormancy by some other "poster" but not sure when that is for my tree. BTW..I've yet to do any kind of pruning, and therefore the tree is not sculpted at all...looks more like a big tree/bush! When soaked the tree last month, I found a worm lying in the bottom of the sink so I know there "was" or "still is" worms in the soil.

The wind is no problem, but don't give the Juniper to much water. I likes to be a bit dry :

Re: Juniper - Brown, just starting

Skihara, hello. Your tree should be able to live outside all year long in your area. It may need a little protection in the winter, but I will leave that advise to those with knowledge of the weather in San Fran. First, and do not get alarmed, Junipers may be long gone before they start to show any death. I do not feel yours is in this group....it is possible though. The fact that the inner parts of the tree are turning brown may be due to that area of the tree not getting enough light and air circulation. The outside breezes are not a problem. Remember this tree is an outdoor tree and lives very nicely in the ground with no protection. The winds may be drying out your tree before you think. You should water this tree as it is getting dry. Just before it dries out completly. You may want to place a piece of a chopstick in the soil to monitor this. Leave the chopstick in the soil....test it daily by removing it... if it is wet...do not water today. If it is totally dry you should have watered yesterday. If it is just damp water today. By 'water yesterday' I mean you may even have to water more than once a day. If the worse has happened, and the tree is no longer with us, you can't do anything wrong! If its still alive the most important lesson to learn is how and when to water, second is where the tree should live. I know [i:c3cda69e3b]Been there, done that, killed my share of trees[/i:c3cda69e3b] Good luck and keep us posted.
