Yes,
Same,
Yes.

Most of the true elms are of Chinese decent. Zelcova can be made into bonsai, but under perfect conditions, the tree grows so fast that the shape can get away very fast if not diligent about pruning and pinching. I say pinching but usually pruning. The wood grows very fast. They can be treated the same as Chinese elm, but don't expect the same results.

You will hear other opinions and you will probably see some links to some exceptional specimens. Like the Hokkaido elm, another Japanese elm, they are far and few between.

Zelcovas make wonderfull forest projects, as they tend to be fairly straight growers. Work best as formal upright projects.

Best regards, Bonsai-al

Thank you, Al
I saw pictures of japanese grey bark elm in Amy Liangs' book, The Living art of Bonsai. They were broom styled specimens and broom styled forest planting and looked very very cool, so i had to have them.
Thanks for the tips too. It makes me happy to know they grow so fast because ill be starting them from seed. Ill show you guys the forest im gonna grow in about 30 years maybe!

They grow fast for sure. And seeds have to be one of the easiest species to make germinate. No need for stratification.

May I ask, where you bought your seeds ?
Last time I bought them from www.seedrack.com, but they are out of stock, and Im hesitant to buy from another person on eBay.

Thanks,
Patrick

I too was hesitant to buy from ebay but i couldnt pass up the deal. I got 100 seeds for $3 from something like dukes nursery on ebay. I just bought them a couple days ago so i havent seen them yet but its the only other place Ive seen to buy them. Im planning on starting a big seed project in the spring so im trying to get them when i can.

Every now and then you can catch a good deal on ebay. Even if the seeds arent real fresh i got 100 of them so i should be able to get a pretty desent crop going.
It looks like most of the seed auctions on ebay is actually seedrack.
