I found an article you had written on the Bonsai Site. I have had my Jade tree for about 3 years. It has become quite large (approx. 2' high and 18" wide) and we decided to replant it - we were told to use a garbage bag to line the wicker pot and puncture holes in the bottom. The plant was doing well until recently when we noticed that it had begun to grow mushroom and had little gnat-looking bugs swarming around it. This was the first we have seen any thing like this with the plant. We repotted it, with new soil and the bugs are again back. The tree also seems to be drooping slightly. We love this plant and seem to be killing it. The bugs are beginning to be a problem and we really don't want to get rid of the plant. Please let us know what we can do.

Hi Jessica. Jade is a succulent and it needs a soil that offers very fast drainage. I'm not sure that the bag and wicker pot is going to provide that. Mushroom is an indication that there is decomposing organic matter in the soil, probably suggesting it is too fertile (too much humus or peat). I would keep Jade outside in full sun, protect from frost and use a very fast draining soil like a cactus/succulent mix. Terra cotta would probably be best, don't use a saucer and elevate the pot a little on some blocks for better drainage.
