I used to have a Jade when I first started Bonsai.I soon realised that it was not going to make a very convincing Bonsai. If it is the same plant I'm thinking of it will have big round leaves full of water and the trunk will quite easily snap like a carrot if bent. Are they succulent or related to cacti?,I don't know.Give this plant back to your Grandmother and go out and get yourself some Chinese Elms or something similiar, these will be far more rewarding in time.

There are a couple Jade Trees in the Museum:

I think they are kind of an acquired taste

I think they are kind of a dis-acquired taste.

People like them at first, but that changes quickly enough as one learns a bit more about bonsai.

Snobbishly yours,

Every now and then you'll see a good one. I saw one last year at a plant sale that was primo. It had been greenhouse grown and had a 5" trunk and around 3' tall. The guy said it was about 50 years old. I don't think it had been grow as a bonsai, per se, but he came pretty close by accident.

Stephen,

This is what a jade can look like eventually. Admittedly it is the 'miniature version' of the larger leaved jade but you get the idea...

are you saying my tree is cr@p? why, I orta...

only kidding yep I know, mine is a poor specimen, but hopefully Stephen can get an idea that these plants can be used as bonsai.

Last weekend I saw 2 beautiful portulacaria cascades, really nice, about 12-16 in across from side to side. If I hadn't just bought a chinese elm I would probably have bought one of them.

Regards,
