Flamboyant

Does anyone have any informationi on collecting and cultivating Flamboyant (Delonix regia)?

The tree grows in the wild here in Barbados. Have my eye on a small one with a trunk caliper of about 3 inches. Any advice on collecting and keeping it alive would be great.

Anyone who has pictures of one please feel free to post it.

Thanks again,

Hi Matt,

I did the search before I posted, Jose Alberto does have a Flamboyant but the thread has information on the tree in spanish. Also there didn't seem to be any information on collecting on any thread,

Thanks for placing the post in the proper forum, I'll remember that in the future.

Regards

Leslie

Sorry, for the late response, I wasn't here for the weekend, tell me what you want to know, yesterday I went taking some seed of this beautiful tree...

Let's see!!! Germinating these seeds is kind of hard, because they are rough, so you can place them in a dish with a paper layer down and another on top, then water them for about 2 months until you see the first roots comming out...

Of course, there is an easier way, before placing them on the dish, rub them with some sandpaper over them, this will reduce the wait time for 1 month, don't rub it too much, just a little piece, and then it will be enough...

I haven't collected a Flamboyant from roots or cuttings, although I don't doubt this tree will make it from cuttings, since Jacaranda makes it, and they are a little bit similar, of course, Flamboyant doesn't grow so fast and so strong...

Anyway, I hope this helps...

Another thing, keep it in a place in which it gets light for almost all day long... since my first flamboyant, well, the one in the pic (the others are seedlings) didn't grow fine for a while, 'cause it got not much sun...

Another thing, be aware of the crows, I was thinking to place a plastic bag over the seedlings, because when they are tender, the crows love to eat them, I lost like 10 seedlings in a day that way...

Hello folks,
I just got back from a two week sailing trip around the British Virgin Islands...
(Look ma, no tan lines...
I collected a lot of seeds from all the tree's and shrubs I could lay my hands on...
Indeed my flamboyant also germinated within a week. Also have seeds from Tamarind, Jacaranda and a lot I don't know but waiting to come out...
Over here it is freezing around 0 degrees Celcius but inside above the central heating it grows... I just love tropical plants, because you always have something to do. Outside bonsai are now hybernating.
Hope to read more about Tamarind and Flamboyant, etc...
Greetings
Eric
