Finding Liquidambar Orientalis
I have spent a lot of time trying to find seeds of the Oriental Sweetgum. Does anyone know of a place or have themselves some seeds for sale? I can't grow maples in this sub-tropic climate, so I'm wanting to use Sweetgum as a substitite.
I can fnd the American Sweetgum, it grows around here, but I have heard their leaves do not reduce near as well as the Oriental ones. |

i have seen them listed on ebay. (i dont see any at the moment)
I have bought a few seeds off ebay and i think you get a good quantitiy of seeds (Zelcova - 15 seeds) for a fairly decent price (2.50). I'd look there, there are a HUGE quantity of seeds available there. |

Yeah, I think I've seen them there as well.( may have been the American ones, too) But, they aren't listed right now, so I wasn't sure if I was remembering correctly. Not a single seedbank on the web I've found carries them. The best I have seen is them on a wish list at one nursery's website. Meaning they couldn't even find them ; )

Liquidambar root cuttings work quite well if you can find a host plant. I was successful with roots up to 1" across, which were the largest the tree had.

Matt,
you wouldn't happen to have any cuttings or seeds from your trees of liquidambar orientalis for sale would ya? It seems nuseries cannot sell it but individuals can, due to its "environmentally invasive" status. |

I don't have any seeds, I think they form in those gum-balls that you see hanging from trees like Sycamore. Certainly a rare sight on bonsai. In any case, we will be moving some trees in the late fall through early spring, so I can see about cuttings for you then.
I know they usually have quite a few mature Liquidambar orientalis at Yamaguchi's Bonsai Nursery in Los Angeles. Regards, Matt
