Re: Ficus Benjamina

the question I don't think is if it can, but is it appropriate. most trees that have jins or shari are due to alot of harsh weathering wind, hail stroms, lightning. Most tropical plants, ficus in particular do not recieve these elemnts, and usually they have the banyan roots instead which compensates. I am not saying it can't be done, but with the growth of most ficus and the habitat they are from it would be difficult to keep one that way or make it look natural. I have seens some nice elms with a single trunk that was slpit to make it a split trunk and it had a nice shari, so maybe you could do something like that, but even in naturue, it would heal up or be covered by banyan roots quick.

Re: Ficus Benjamina

I agree with Mr. K

You can do this, but it should be in keeping with the style of the tree. The weatherbeaten, arose from its own ashes look that juniper can pull off so well wouldn't complement your *average* ficus. But I have seen some boxwoods styled convincingly as oaks, so if the tree makes a statement and the "story" holds, why not?

Just be sure you don't have a typical ficus umbrella canopy with a 6" jin sticking out the top. That is a story that wouldn't play very well!

Regards,

Matt
