Fastest Growing Trees?

From time to time TreeBay.com gets some interesting emails. A recent one asked about the fastest growing trees.

Our response appears below, but feel free to add your observations: Which of your bonsai grow most quickly?

----------------------------------------------------------------
Hi Jim,

Thanks for your interest in our website. We received your question, what are the top 10 fastest groing trees?"

I'm not sure whether you question applies specifically to bonsai. Here are some trees with fast growth, not necessarily the best species for bonsai. For bonsai, Chinese Elm (Ulmus parviflora) Trident Maple (Acer palmatum) and Japanese Black Pine (Pinus thunbergii) are some pretty fast growers. In containers, growth is slowed down quite a bit. There other trees seen in the landscape that grow more quickly. Here are some of those in no particular order:

Ameri-Willow Extremely fast growth - 8' to 15' in the first year

Hybrid Cottonwoods and Poplar

Douglas Fir

Aspens Norway spruce, red pine, Scots pine, and
Hetz Wintergreen Arborvitae.

Giant Sequoia

I'm pretty sure bamboo is classified as a grass, but since it has its use in bonsai, it is the fastest growing plant family on the planet. Some growing an inch or two a day.

Bamboo is a grass, and it can grow even faster than that: some species have been measured at FOUR FEET in a single day! Of course it can't sustain that pace for long.
