Re: dogwood
I don't, but do you have a picture? I have a species that I'm having trouble placing!
Thanks! Capt. Jack |

Re: dogwood
There's not much to take a pic of yet, it hasn't leafed out. As soon as it does I'll post one for you.

Re: dogwood
Below is a website for a nursery that has a nice selection of dogwoods. The one I was looking for is a Chinese Flowering Dogwood. Maybe this site can help you?!

Re: dogwood
I always just called them Kousa Dogwoods. I believe one familiar name for them is rather unlikely:
Japanese Strawberry Tree. When I imported two in 1996, that is what the Japanese Plant Protection marked on the phytosanitary certificate. This was after looking through a big reference book that looked like it had fallen off an aircraft carrier and bobbed in the Pacific for a decade. Here is a picture of the fruit of the kousa dogwood. I brought in both red and white kousa dogwoods. The red didn't make it, but the white one is doing splendidly! http://www4.ocn.ne.jp/~nanphoto/01127.html Thank you for bringing this up, as now I know that it is the edible fruit that gives the tree its name. I'll be looking forward to this year's crop with anticipation! Below is the Cornus Kousa in training. I'm using paper-wrapped copper wire for styling, and organic fertilizer. The soil mix is mostly akadama (Japanese red clay soil). It's right at the end of the flowering period. The branches of dogwood grow very horizontally. The flowers are distinctive, four-petals. I am keeping a lot of branches on this tree to help assure its strength.

Re: dogwood
Beautiful tree! I hope that mine will look that good some day. Right now it's about 30" tall and only about 3/4" thick. It hasn't leafed out yet, but looks like it's going to try soon. I hope! How old is yours?

Re: dogwood
It's hard to say. I think somewhere around 25 probably field grown for most of that time. It was balled and wrapped like it had just been harvested when I bought it a few years ago.
