Dawn redwood trunk chop?
I found a wonderful dawn redwood this weekend while hunting through the local nurseries. I have one hopefully simple question: any harm in chopping the trunk back this time of year (I live in Seattle)?
I was thinking to chop at the red line, and let the branch labelled by the black * become the new leader. Comments? ![]()

Re: Dawn redwood trunk chop?
No problem. Folks in Seattle can chop trunks year round.
Seriously, this sounds like an OK plan to me, particularly if it stays in that nice big container until the apex sprouts out. If you don't have any taper in the apex yet, it might be a good idea to chop at the 2/3 point. That's kind of a rule of thumb. So if your final tree were going to be 1/3 higher than the red mark, that would be about the right place. The reason for this is that you need some room to develop a tapering apex. In judging where to chop the trunk, you have to look at the point where the interest (be it movement, or taper) seems to stop, factor in if you have a replacement branch handy to become the new apex, and consider also what the roots are doing and where the best view of the roots can be found, then apply the 2/3 rule, and whack.... But wait! If you're going to do some carving - like a jin top (lightning strike tree) you might have some other options too. How about that branch that comes off a bit lower, toward the left side. Leave a 5" stub of a trunk, and wire the replacement apex branch up hard against the trunk after you carve it to a point. Regards, Matt

Re: Dawn redwood trunk chop?
Well, I did that trunk chop, and repotted the beast. We'll see what happens. Not much to look at yet, but I'm optimistic that the repotting and chopping went well.
Thanks for all the advice, Matt! ![]()

Warning:Old thread
If this tree is still among the living I'd love to see its progress!
