Cypress Knees

We have lots of Cypress trees here that grow in the swamps and along the bayous. They have whats called Cypress Knees growing from the roots. Its actually part of the root of a tree that grows up around 2 to 3 feet above the water level. I dont know why they do this. My question is Is it possable to have cypress knees on a bonsai cypress? I've been looking at pictures and saw a few cypress bonsais but no knees.

I have seen a few collected bonsai that had knee features. I don't think it is the type of thing that will develop in cultivation, though.

Regards,

Matt

Well, they're not quite true knees, but close: here are a couple of root protusions on a swamp cypress forest I've been developing. This isn't the greatest camera angle, but each sticks up a few inches out of the soil.

Yes it is possible to have knees on a bald cypress bonsai. At the Kimura convention in Dallas this past April there was a vendor from La. who had a very large specimen already shaped with knees that went at least half way up the trunk. This was a very impressive looking tree to say the least. The knees were in total proportion with the rest of the tree. And to be truthful, these trees don't need to be in standing water as bonsai. They will adapt to water as you see in the swamps, but they don't have to live in it as a requirement to survive.

Info on knees

I have been doing some reading and found out that it is possable to get cypress knees on a Bonsai. The trick is to keep the roots submerged in water constantly. That is why the Cypress near the Bayous have knees, because their roots are constantly under water. Notice you never see knees on cypress in someones yard.
I hope I cleared up some confusion.
