Crepe Myrtle hard prune now?

I have noticed many people around my neighborhood have hard pruned their crepe myrtles down to no oliage and main branches. What is the reasoning for this and should I do the same? I have two dwarf myrtles. Your help is appreciated.

If your talking about about the crepe myrtles in peoples yards, the ones I see here,no one trims theres. Its about the only tree they don't cut back here in San Diego. Now my bonsai crepes(sounds like something to eat)I trim late winter here.

Very good question.

Peace
Bob

Mr. Zenwarrior,

I believe what you are refering to is often called the "Texas Crape Myrtle Massacre"...This is one of those 'landscape company' practices that has been around for a long time , and probably will not end soon even though there are many trying to get information to the public about how 'wrong' this is...We have some really "ugly" Crape Myrtles here in San Antonio also as a result of this over pruning at the wrong time of the year...Here are a couple links with more information on the subject...

Stop the Crape Murder

and Proper Pruning Techniques

and Crepe Myrtles - Growing Gardens with Anita Morton

Although our Crape Myrtle 'bonsai' require somewhat different techniques than those growing in landscapes, there is some good information to be found in these articles...

Regards
Behr
