In Or Out

I have been reading where elms can be grown inside or outside (as long as they are protected from the weather) . I have mine outside under a carport surrounded by bales of straw. Would it be better for my trees to bring them inside for the winter (get in extra grow time) or give them a rest for awhile?

Thanks
Steve

Sanka,
long time no see. The answer to you question is yes. In or out , yes, either or, yes. The Carport cover sounds perfect though , why you want to mess with perfection, eh?

Leave them out. They need their rest this time of year.

hmmm.... personal choice really.

My experience? Glad you asked I have always brought my elms in for the winter, struggled with spider mites, leaf drop with subsequent new lengthy growth etc so on. Then I thought, why not, I will put them out with the others one winter to see how they fair.....Killed them. They didnt take to the subzero cold snaps, I did not protect them well enough. So, I have more elms now, and I keep them indoors....and alive (this is zone 3/4 tho). So, keep that in mind too.

Paul

I am keeping mine indoors - but this is my first one, and I'm fairly new.

But under a growlight, it has put out a ton of new growth....I've been doing a little leaf reduction, and back budding.....its covered in new growth.
