Brown Needles? Sunburn?
I have a Juniper procumbens nana bonsai and I think that he (his name is Bob) may have been sunburnt. The sun is pretty harsh in New Zealand and I left Bob on the window ledge and he has come back with brown tips and stuff. (BTW it is summer down here at the moment) I have trimmed all the brown stuff off and have been watering him daily and giving him liquid plant food ever two weeks and it seems to be picking up again. I have also brought Bob inside so that he still gets light but not directlyon him. Was this sunburn? And is it ok to have him inside? |

Re: Brown Needles? Sunburn?
Hi Jae_Bear,
If it were mine I definitely would keep him outside. Junipers love the sun. Put him in a spot where he will get around half a day of sun then part shade the rest of the day and he will be tickled green. Do not over water and make sure that you have a well draining soil. Hope this helps.John

Re: Brown Needles? Sunburn?
Thanks John,
The thing is that every time I put him outside he gets all brown regardless of how much I water him and when I bring him inside he does seem to flourish...There be my problem. I know that Juniper are supposed to stay outside and I try but he is in my sun room, not directly in the sunlight but he does get it for most of the day... Is this ok? ![]() |

Re: Brown Needles? Sunburn?
greetings,
If he seems to florish in your sunroom then by all means keep him happy. I have to admitt something, This is the first time that I have talked about a tree by him I think this is really getting close to your tree. I believe that you will be a great Bonsai ist and really take care of your trees. Thats what its all about. Keep up the good work.John

Re: Brown Needles? Sunburn?
Thanks John,
I think that I will leave him in the sunroom but thank you so much for your help I really appreciate it! ![]() I just wanted to make sure that I was doing things right with Bob. I don't want to stuff this up. He is my first and I think that I am doing really well. I will try to get a pic up as soon as I can... |

Re: Brown Needles? Sunburn?
It could be that the brown needles are caused by your trimming. Cutting the buds or needles on a juniper in any fashion will cause damage to the needle tips and browning. I learned this the hard before discovering to pluck new growth with my fingertips. Even accidentally pinching with my fingernails will cause this browing so I am trying to be careful. My junipers grow in full sun in TX and are slowly shedding their brown needles.
