Lazy trees...

Hi,
Just wondering if anyone has anyone ever seen a tree do NOTHING for its entire growing season?
I have this red beech that i ordered early spring and placed in a three gallon (??) pot and it is strange cause i didnt do nothing to it cause it is for my mom for landscaping so i didnt get to torture... i mean nurture it like all my other twigs, i just water and fertilize it, and this thing has done nothing, it is so lazy it wont even die on me. seriously the same eight leaves are on this twig, no new growth. Just wondering.
someone told me it might have gotten shocked from being transplanted into such a large container ( tube to three gallon) should i slap this someone?
I thought watching trees grow took some getting used to but watching trees not grow is unbearable.

Beech are pretty slow growers. They are for the patient types. Beech are the last deciduous trees to leaf out, and they carry their dead leaves long into winter.

You have to think on a different scale with beech. If you want some scary growth, get yourself an elm. This beech is probably busy growing roots you can't see to help make for a big spring beech push of another 8 new leaves next year.

Regards,

Matt.

I've got some Beech just like yours. I traded a guy up north some Elm for them in the fall of 1999. They've made three or four new leaves since then. I repotted them this last spring and they seemed to want to grow until the temps got above 80 degrees and they've been in summer dormancy ever since. If I'm lucky the weather will cool down and they'll make a couple of buds for next spring. Mine still have three year old leaves on them! Not dead, they just won't grow. They definitely don't like the summer heat around here and I'm thinking they might need a different PH soil too.

Life's a beech
