Barberry

Greetings.

I found this at a local nursery and thought it had decent potential. Inside the suckers and all, there is a pretty good main trunk with some movement.

I would like some suggestions for this tree. I am going to let it grow out again. The picture shown below is a recent trim, and following growth spurt. This is bouncing back nicely, having been severely cut back and root pruned.

What are your thoughts on pots for a barberry?

What do you choose as front? This side? Or......

I choose the first side. Is that a pond plant basket you are growing your tree in?

Adam, Yes it is a pond basket. Do you use them?? If not, I recommend it highly. It works just as well, if not better than a 'root maker' nursery pot, and even the training pots with screened sides you will see elsewhere. They help form new "fine" root systems for your bonsai. Guy wiring is a snap using the top row of mesh as your anchor. They are about 3 bucks at home depot for the largest one (13 inch square) and cheaper. Come in rounds, ovals and smaller sizes.
No, I dont work for the pond basket company....

I have about fifteen of my trees in these baskets as of now. Next spring I will repot more into them. I currently use them for larch, hornbeam, amur maples, norway spruce and a large chinese elm. All of them are doing much better than those in my regular pots (nursery pots) with bonsai soil.

I vote for #2. It seems to have better movement in the lower part of the trunk. That's going to be a nice tree. I'm not a very good pot picker. Maybe an oval dark green Or if the leaves come out in red and end in red, a dark reddish color?? I know there are different colors of barberry.
