Bamboo(Dracanea)
I am very new to bonsai. Just got some bamboo stalks of the Dracanea family. You put them in water and they grow fairly fast and whenyou feel it is long enough you can cut a chunk off the bottom and it will re generate a new stalk near the top. The guy who sold it to me had several which were shaped with cotton and wire. I can see the potential for a bonsai bamboo but I was curious if anyone has had experience with this. Can the leaves be kept small? Can it be made thick? I will include pictures soon. It is also called "Lucky Bamboo" or "Fortune Bamboo".
Thnx Nick |

Re: Bamboo(Dracanea)
Hi Nick,
Lucky bamboo isn't a true bamboo, but it certainly looks the part. I often see it shaped and twisted in interesting ways. I have never seen a large plant though. Most are rooted cuttings, which I understand are very easy to do. They all seem to be about the same size, maybe 2/3-3/4 inch, sometimes bundled or wrapped around each other. With true bamboo, the growing tip is sometimes pinched out after it elongates somewhat. With the lucky bamboo, you might try the same thing and see how it responds. Good luck - I'm looking forward to your pictures! Matt
