Amur Maple wilting
As always, I'm sure you all will provide informative tips. This time an Amur Maple cutting (about 1 1/2 years old) I received through the mail about three weeks ago is having problems! When it arrived, some of the leaves had some wilting right at the tips (the tips were black, crisp and curling a bit). I figured it was just an insect since it had been field-grown. But it seems to be getting worse. There are now only about 5 or 6 leaves on the tree without any wilting. As I said, this only seems to affect the tips of the leaves - the bulk of the leaves look fairly healthy. Upon receiving it was shifted (unpruned) into a terracotta pot in a free-draining mix and has been watered about once per day. It never dries out completely. It sits on a deck in zone 4 and gets roughly 6 hours of direct sunlight (I slowly brought the plant into full sun). My mother suggested it was dry because the porch is about 5 feet above the air conditioner, and noted that "full sun" plants she has kept on the porch do better in partial shade. One of my flowering quinces is also having a similar problem, and some of the others have leaves that are getting crispier as well. (but no others are showing it visually like the amur maple)
Sorry to prattle, Thanks! ~Michael |

Re: Amur Maple wilting
I'm not for sure what's going on with your maple but a couple of things come to mind. First I would move it away from the A/C. That has to be like an almost constant gust of super heated air blowing across the leaves. I can't imagine anything but desert plants doing well in that environment.
Maples really hate to have there roots messed with when they are in leaf. I realize you did not do any root pruning but who knows what was done before it was shipped and that long trip through the mail couldn't have helped any. Also you may be giving it too much sun too quick. I would move it to a cooler spot with indirect light and see how it responds. Tony |

Re: Amur Maple wilting
i have a few things that burn on the edge of the leaf with a sudden drought, was it dry when you got it?,it takes time to recover too.
the AC burns our hibiscus to a crisp when it grows up that high. i would move it also.

Re: Amur Maple wilting
It had a little bit of this wilting when received, yes. The leaves don't seem to be particularily dry - just the curled tips. I've read that the amur maple likes to be grown in full sunlight but it seems other maples (like palmatum) prefer indirect light. Any opinions on this? Hopefully I should have my plant bench done in a week where they will be at least 10 or 15 feet away from the air conditioner (and to the side, rather than above).
General question: will most "full sun" plants (cotoneasters, crabs, etc.) live if grown in complete indirect sunlight or will they eventually die? Thanks, ~Michael |

Put it in the shade for a couple of weeks and don't over water it! Pick it up every day and feel how heavy the pot is. When you start to feel a noticable difference in the weight give it a drink of water and then repeat checking it for weight every day.
It's the middle of the summer. Move it back into full sun gradually in the mornings in August.

This maybe revival of an old thread.
But I notice the initial problem of this thread on my Amur maple cutting and on some heavy root pruned amur maple. Might give an anwser to this thread.
