Airlayering Ficus nerifolia

How easy or difficult is it to airlayer a ficus nerifolia? (1" diameter at the layer site, growing indoors.)

Any particular preferred methods? Preferred time of the year?

I've got a "problem tree" that I could see making into two shohins.

Figs are always trying to airlayer themselves by sending down aerial roots, so you should have no trouble at all!

Take a look at this article by Jerry Meislik. The bottom part is all about airlayering ficus.

Great! Thanks, Matt. I'll probably post a shot of the problem tree before doing the layer, just in case anyone has a better idea of what to do with it.

As an aside, I'm sure he doesn't remember me (or curses me, if he does), but I delivered Jerry Meislik's newspaper for about five years during my early teens.

It was all about girls and cars back then (or, to be more honest, it was all about dreaming that someday I'd manage to get my hands on at least one of the two) so I never really cared that I had a bonsai star right there in my neighborhood. My loss!

All the best,
Old Mister

Thats funny Ole M. crow.

I know a guy in our club who grew up a couple doors down from John Naka's house. Now he wants to learn bonsai. He kicks himself all the time.
