Japanese Maple

Greetings.
I just purchased a Japanese Maple (Acer Palmatum) from Lowes for 14.00. It has a 1 1/2" trunk with good root spread, some interesting lower branches, a sparse area, and then a nice top. It is in a 2 1/2 gallon pot and stands about 3 feet. I am planning on doing an air layer and my questions are:

1. How long does this species take to develop roots?

2. Can I do it now?

3. Is it possible to do multiple air layers along the same trunk line?

4. Should I let it hang out in it's current pot or move to a grow box?

Thanks a bunch
mwb

1 & 3) You can usually layer maple in a single season. because it's nearly fall, if you were to start the layer now, you would almost certainly not be able to separate the air layer until next fall or the following spring.

2) You can successfully do in-line layers on many plants. It would probably be best since you don't have much experience with this tree (and I assume the process) to do one at a time, beginning with the uppermost layer. That way if it fails it won't stop you from trying again lower. Maples tend to weep sap when they are cut, so they might not be the best prospect for inline layers anyways.

4) Don't know. Why don't you post a picture?

Regards,

Matt

Thanks Matt.
I suppose I will wait until spring, that way I can hope to separate the following fall (if all goes well). I will then do one at a time, because you are right, I don't have much experience. I have successfully layered several plants but I can count them on a hand and a half - and never a maple.
As far as posting a picture...I'm still stuck in the eighties! I don't have a digital camera. Maybe it's time to get with the new millenium.
Thanks again,
mwb
