Acer ?

I went on the ol nursery hunt and found two nice trees. They have sort of been trained for the last tree years at least. One was maked as a Seiju Elm but the other was without a tag of any sort.

It is a maple. At the moment the leaves are green, yellow and red. They are small, about 1 inch across at best. The trunk is upright and the bark is half green.

I am just wondering what type acer it is?

Thanks Travis

Re: Acer ?

Hi Travis,

It's difficult to tell without a photo. The description you've given could match dozens of non-maples too! If the leaves have three distinct lobes, and it is a maple, it is probably Trident Maple, but there are still other possibilities. If it is palmate, appearing to have 5-7 lobes per leaf, it might be Japanese maple. I have attached a leaf of this type.

Re: Acer ?

It is the latter of the two with 5 to 7 lodes. So most likely I have a Acer Palmatum Japanese Maple?

On the tag that came with the elm I found:

"Miniature Plant Kingdom. Occidental, Calif. 95465"

I did a search for that name but their address is diffrent. Does anyone have info on them?

Re: Acer ?

It's undoubtedly the same place. Sebastapol is just a shohin's throw from Occidental. The website is

http://www.miniplantkingdom.com

There aren't many photos on the site unfortunately, but they do a thriving business in starter materials.

Regards,

Matt

Re: Acer ?

I find it hard to stay away from the nursuries. Even Wal-mart. I have been far and wide (Dallas-Fort Worth) looking for new places to hunt. Then one day I found a place RIGHT down the street from my house that specializes in trees. WOW. They even have Starter acer maples.... He is going to get me some jap. black pines. hehehe. And then today I found I can biuld my own Micro misting system and never leave Home-Depo. Now all I have to do is biuld a frame for me green house to go along with the Poly-something-or-other 6mm stuff that I am going to order on-line.
