Regardless of conditions, dry, hot, cold, or wet a Maple should never be put in a situation where it will soak in water. Of course her in Michigan this is seldom a problem in the winter where they are frozen solid till the first of April.
If you think you have this problem your trees should be over-wintered under cover or have the pots elevated so that excess water drains off or out. The success of this effort does however depend on the porosity of the soil mix. If you plant in muck you are in trouble.
