Check the ***FAQ*** here or above under Bonsai Terms and look up Tanuki. It's the same thing

Since the understock of a Tanuki or Phoenix graft is just a dead piece of driftwood, it's not really a graft in the strictest sense. It's also guaranteed not to "take," but the illusion can be pretty realistic.
